Licensing

Not all avatars are the designed with the same purposes, so they can have many different settings.

One of the best advantages about VRM is that it allows the creator to set up a custom settings on the avatar and this is kept in the metadata produced while generating the 3D model. If this VRM is minted as an NFT, the metadata wont be editable as easy in the future.

Here we’ll cover the information and licensing settings and how we’ve described them in CryptoAvatars.

Information

This is the information that are able to edit in your VRM file:

  • Tittle: Set the name of the Avatar

  • Version: Used to keep track of the avatar version

  • Author: Set up the name of the Creator

  • Contact Information: You can add any relevant ways of contacting the creator. Twitter, Email, Website…

  • Reference: You can set up if this avatar is referencing to anything.

  • An Image: This is a VRM internal thumbnail. (recommended to upload a slow weight image)

License settings in VRM

With the VRM format your avatars will be able to be used in multiple applications, social interactions, content creation and many more things that we can’t even imagine. To be able to cover as many potential uses of the avatar, VRM allows you to store:

  • Permissions to use the avatar by different people in diverse range of situations.

  • Modification and Redistribution Licenses.

Personation / Characterization Permissions

This are the custom settings that you will be able to find in any VRM file, on CryptoAvatars, we helped visualize some of the concepts with icons to help you identify easier the avatar that you are looking for.

Take in mind, that VRM 1.0 was officially released on September 23 of 2022. Some older avatars might not have the settings adjusted properly. Many early creators were not fully aware of the meaning of some this setting until recently. In this cases please confirm with the creator.

A person who can perform with this avatar

  • The avatar may only be manipulated by its creator.

Only the Avatar Creator is allowed to use the avatar.

  • Authorized only to explicitly specified person

A person authorized by the creator can use the avatar. In the case of CryptoAvatars, if you are Owner, you are allowed to use it.

  • Authorized to anyone

Anybody can use this avatar at any time.

Permission to perform violent acts with this avatar

  • Disallow

The user cannot use the avatar in violent situations.

  • Allow

The user can use the avatar in violent situations.

Permission to perform sexual acts with this avatar

  • Disallow

The user cannot perform sexual acts with the avatar.

  • Allow

The user can perform sexual acts with the avatar.

For commercial use

  • Disallow

The user cannot use the avatar for commercial purposes.

  • Allow

The user can use the avatar for commercial purposes

Some examples might be: Creating paid video content, like Youtube videos, movies, using the avatar as the image of a Brand, doing ads, etc…

Other License Url

The creator can write up any specific permission they might want in an external site and place the URL link here.

You can use any place to store this license but for long lasting records of this unique permissions set by the creator, we recommend decentralized storage. A good example could be IPFS, but please remind this could also require some maintenance too.

Redistribution / Modifications License

By default you can Set up a between 7 different kind of Creative Commons Licenses, Redistribution Prohibited or your own License.

Please bear in mind this is can affect future commercial uses, future redistribution of the files, sharing the original files, build up modifications based on this avatar, and more.

Right now CryptoAvatars only highlights avatars with CC0 License, options to see more licensing are on the way.

License Type

  • Redistribution Prohibited

The most restrictive License, you cannot distribute the avatar files. If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.

This are general basic terms that should cover a general understanding of the avatar license. You might need to get in touch with the avatar creator to be sure what you are allowed to do with it.

CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication

The most open license out there, the avatar becomes public domain.

You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission.
